Host gifts are a tricky thing, especially when you don't know the person very well. You want to get something nice and useful, but it also has to be generic enough that it appeals to almost anyone!
When do you give a host gift, exactly?
Well, I like to bring one almost every time I'm invited to an event - including family. That's your Christmas parties, Thanksgiving dinners, baby showers, wedding showers, and so on.
And yes, even family should get one!
By the way, a host gift is for the host - not for sharing at the party. Don't expect to crack open that bottle of wine or snack platter during the event.

- Bottle of wine. Look, you really can't beat the classic host gift here. To make things more special I like to keep some of these labels on hand so I can slap them on a last-minute bottle and look like I've put a lot of effort in! (Shh, don't tell.)
- Take out gift certificate. A Starbucks gift card (or your fav place) will be a nice pick-me-up when they need it. Plus they can choose what they want.
- A candle. For awhile these were a lame gift idea but they've come back around to being popular again. Make sure you get something nice though!
- Serving dishes or accessories. Lots of options here to choose from. If you want to go all out give something personalized.
- Seasonal/themed gift. For example: If you're attending a Christmas party a tree ornament of Christmas cookie kit are fun gifts. Or if it's Cinco de Mayo, get something margarita themed!
